Wehrmann Angus, New Market

The round barn, built in the 1920s originally for training racehorses, is home to the Wehrmann production sales.
Wehrmann Angus was established in 1975 in southwest Georgia, but moved to New Market July 1, 1986. During its early years, and continuing today, Wehrmann Angus has adhered strictly to performance principles, using the best bulls possible and ambitiously culling cattle that fail to perform on a roughage-based diet.

Wehrmann Angus pays respect to top-producing dams Rita 5H11 and Rita 7T26, in addition to Leachman Blackbird 2036 in an on-farm cemetery.

Competitive growth, adequate milk, maternal ability and a sturdy frame on which to hang a desirable carcass have been selection goals. Because of the genetic demands placed on the herd, Richard McClung Jr., who became managing partner in 1978, and Nicholas Wehrmann have developed Angus cattle that excel in growth and maternal traits.

Wehrmann Angus has cooperated with Iowa State University and Virginia Tech on several research projects with practical implications. In the words of McClung, “We don’t collect data and get involved in research projects because we lack things to keep us busy — we do it to expand our knowledge, to evaluate and to improve.”

McClung is a past director of the American Angus Association and currently serves on the Beef Improvement Federation board of directors.
