Lazy Lane Farms Inc., Upperville

In addition to raising Angus cattle, Lazy Lane Farm raises thoroughbred racing horses. The farm was home to Hansel, the 1991 Preakness winner. Lazy Lane will also host other cattle displays.

Lazy Lane Farms Inc. is located in Loudon County. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Allbritton purchased the operation in 1981 to breed Thoroughbred horses. Angus cattle were introduced to the farm in 1982 for rotational grazing with the horses. Today, there are 125 registered Angus cows.

Seedstock are marketed each year through the Beef Cattle Improvement Association, association-sponsored sales and bull and commercial female sales in the spring and fall.

General manager Frank Shipp and cattle manager James Wylie take pride in good land stewardship. Lazy Lane has been recognized with the Bay Friendly Farm Award and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Clean Water Farm Award. In 2001, they also received the Angus Journal Land Stewardship Award.

The historic Amandale Farm, previously owned by past American Angus Association president John Gall, is also part of Lazy Lane’s operation. U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower purchased seedstock from Amandale.
